What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses the creative process of making art as a way to improve mental health and wellbeing. It provides a non-verbal language that can be particularly helpful if you’re struggling to put your thoughts and emotions into words. Art therapy can help you identify, explore and work through difficult feelings, behaviours and experiences as well as develop greater self awareness, coping strategies and reduce anxiety.

You don’t need to be an experienced artist or have any technical skill. We may experiment and play with different creative processes to see what connects with you. It can be as simple as working with a metaphor or an existing image that can help explore your story. The creative process is co-created and agreed between us in a confidential and compassionate space. You may decide you do not need to use the arts if talking is what you would prefer.

Benefits of art therapy:

Nervous system regulation -  the art-making process can help engage the mind and body.
Increased self-awareness and self-esteem through learning how to express yourself more freely.
A better understanding of unconscious processes and how they play out in everyday life.
Art can provide a different perspective which helps us to problem solve difficulties.

Getting Started

Once you are ready to make contact, we can arrange a free 15 minute consultation on the phone or online to begin to think about your needs, ask any questions and decide if art psychotherapy sounds like a good fit for you.

We can then arrange for the first session. This will be free of charge to ensure that I am the right therapist for you. During the first session, I will ask more about your history and aims for therapy. If we agree on a course of therapy, I will give you a contract and questionnaire for you to understand more about the process and your rights.

I suggest regular reviews of the sessions. After the first six sessions, we can check how things are going and decide together whether you would like to continue. We can arrange to work short or long term, dependant on your requirements.

Session Information and Fees

Sessions are weekly and last for 50 minutes and take place on the same day and time each week. The cost of each session is £75. I will send an invoice at the end of each month.

I have a small number of low fee spaces. Feel free to contact me for further information.

Cancellations made with 24 hours notice will not be charged. If a session is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, it will be charged at the usual rate.

WORKSHOPS

Trowbridge Gardens is a community space in Hackney Wick, dedicated to art and well-being. Our studio is situated above the community space and a quiet space for individual art therapy.

I also run print-making workshops at Trowbridge Gardens community space, focusing on connecting with others, learning a new process, and sharing experiences as we make art.
